In looking for a 3-pin boot, I was dissatisfied with what was on the market. At the low end, the cheap boots offer little support or warmth, and often simply fall apart. At the high end, plastic boots can have fiddly lacing systems you don't want to mess with at the trailhead. The backcountry Alpina I looked at flexed right onto my toes, apparently a common complaint, and I hated the lacing system. So I went back in the boot time machine to about 1978, when real hiking boots were beautifully made, stitched to a heavy Vibram lug sole, and took months to break in but lasted a decade. The kind of boot Danner would have made before they started just importing crap from China, the kind real hikers would buy. That's what this boot is like: meticulously crafted in Italy of leather, heavy, and destined to last. I had thought it would be hell to break in, but I was pleasantly surprised: I wore them a little around the house, and they felt great on the trail. The lacing system is very simple and fast, they're warm, and the lining is synthetic to wick away moisture. The Vibram soles are great for walking or climbing. They're high enough without being too high, and stiff enough to give confidence in ski control. They are fairly hefty at over 3 lbs a pair, but this is not noticed in skiing. All in all, they seem like a great investment.
