Like my title says, there wasn't a lot of information about this skate online. Heak, there isn't a lot of reviews of many inline skates online... why is that? Inline Skating isn't very popular? Most of the age that enjoys inline skating is older or computer deficient? Inline Skaters don't care to review purchases online for the online community to read? Well, whatever the reasons, I will give my opinion on this CrossFire 100 Inline Skate, but first, to really understand what skill level I am, let me give you a background of my riding experience and what I was looking for:
In 2009, I bought a pair of cheap-o skates from a large retailer for about $60. At the time that was not cheap for me and my budget! They had 76mm wheels, a plastic wheel frame, abec3 cheap-o bearings, and a pretty comfy shoe. I couldn't wait to skate on them so I hurried over to a trail and started skating. I found it to be harder than riding a bicycle. I tried going down a hill and that was a mistake. I ended up on the ground, and it was not very enjoyable. Not only because I fell, but because the trails were very cruddy with pot holes (Colorado), large differences in pavement, many hills, and just a challenging time for a beginner. I ended up going out two more times and it was just too challenging to ride. The inline skates found their way to the bottom of my closet to spend the next 2 years.
In July of 2011 I am now living in Florida, and I have to say it is a treat to have good quality roads, trails that cater to people who love the outdoors, beautiful weather more than 3 months out of the year (Colorado was 9 months freezing, born and raised there, hated it with all my loins) so I was excited to take my dusty 2 year old cheap-o skates along with me to Florida and hit the trails! Wow! What had I been missing out on?! Inline Skating was FUN!!! I couldn't believe it! Not to mention I could breathe at a lower elevation! The weather here lasts longer than 3 months out of 12! The roads are beautiful! So after about 10 times out on my inline skates, I decided I wanted really great inline skates!!
I hurried to the internet and started browsing. I started reading articles about what to look for in inline skates, and I read about the history of some of the largest makers of skates. I read about wheels size, durometer, wheel bearing specs, the rigid frames, combinations of skate wheels sizes and what that could do for a person, I was reading about the different types of aluminum and how they are fabricated, and I was very interested. I spent the next 2 weeks reading and learning when I had free time.
The day came I decided I had found the pair of inline skates for me. I zeroed in on the CrossFire 100 by RollerBlade. What attracted me to them initially was similar how I met my girlfriend; at first it was looks, and then after learning more about it, my love grew into something more.... but I ran into a big problem... there was not many great reviews on this pair... I read a review that said, "They suck." I sat there thinking to myself, what does that mean? Can they be more specific? I read a review that said, "They are fast" and I read one that claimed they had "hot spots" where the ankle would rub. I also read that they were hard to lace up... so I was hesitant in ordering them because I didn't want to spend this kind of money on cruddy skates. I spent a great deal of time reading, and re-reading the reviews from many different sites. I watched the videos on youtube (not many of them) of the crossfires, and finally decided to give it a whirl.
I ordered the skates online through a company that was offering the best deal at the time. I got them very quickly, and about as fast as they came in, I was racing out the door with them attached to my feet.
Here is my review....
CONS:
Easy to lace up, however the metal eyelets that are at the top of the lacing system are in an awkward position to where it takes some effort to lace the very top of the skates. I had originally read this and figured the reviewer was being an air head, however after using these skates it is true. I found myself not even using the very top metal eyelets because it takes some time, and I don't feel the difference when the very top one isn't laced through... the rest of them are plentiful for my taste to where I don't care about that issue.
Another thing worth mentioning that I didn't like is that on the inside of the skate they are not as pretty as the outside. What I mean is, picture if you put on the skates and are standing there, if you look down the inside of the skates, ya know, the sides of skates people don't see as much.,... they have less graphics, and are not as stunning as the outside (the side people primarily see when you are skating).... You might be thinking to yourself, "that sucks"... or you might be thinking "why the heal did you mention that"... The reason is because this is a fair review where I am honestly listing what I did not like and what I did like, however small it was.
PROS:
Stunning looks, I was very shocked how attractive this set of skates are. Wow.
The taller wheel size, I can stride very long strides and cover a lot of ground quickly. Also the wheels are lasting a LOT longer than my 76mm 76A shorter, softer wheels on my cheap-o skates.
Considering how large they are, they are LIGHTER than I thought they would be. If you are coming from a light skate like a racing skate, then these will feel heavy,... HOWEVER, if you keep an open mind that they are high cuff, and there is a lot to these skates, they have done a good job making them light FOR WHAT THEY ARE!
I have found these skates to be very comfy. Is it as comfy as laying in a fluffy goose down bed pillow top while being fed grapes? Probably not... but for a pair of boots strapped to the feet, I don't see how it could get any better. You can also buy sole inserts if you want an arch, or if you want gel cushioning, however I recommend a firmer bottom, just like bicycles, the firmer, the better control, and less your muscles have to worry about all that unnecessary movement.
My feet did not sweat profoundly, and I have been skating in Florida summer heat and humidity...
I have had several inline skaters starring at my feet, which I will take as a compliment... they really are beautiful skates.
I had NO ISSUE going from my 76mm wheels to the bigger 100mm wheels, however I have read others who take longer to adapt. That will be per person... if you catch on to things like this quickly, you are good to go. If you don't... just keep practicing.
I practiced braking before going down hills... so when I went down some smaller hills, I was okay, I haven't lost control yet... keep in mind I am still considered a novice newby to inline skating.
For serious review readers, It would be worth mentioning my statistics... I am 27 years old, male, I wear size 11 skates, and I weigh 236 pounds.
As far as responding to others reviews:
Someone mentioned bearing noise after 200 miles. I have not encountered this, but have been careful not to get them wet, or take them walking in dirt or grass. My next set of bearings I will buy SKATE RATED BEARINGS, and not the ABEC BEARINGS.. ABEC rated is an oldschool system that were not meant for inline skates and the weight distribution and such... so next set of bearings get SKATE rated like BONES REDS, or BONES SWISS. That also lets you take the side of the bearings off and service them.
Someone mentioned pinch points, I did not encounter this. Everyone's ankle complex is different, so that will vary. After I skate more and more I don't need the boots SUPER TIGHT, so some room to breathe helps the foot.
Someone said lacing is difficult... only if you choose to use the top metal eyelets,... I don't use them because they would take more time. .. I have not noticed any negatives in eliminating the use of the top metal eyelets.
Someone said they are average speed. This is in every way bogus, as taller wheels travel further with each 1-spin of the wheel, and if your bearings are running smooth, this is a bogus statement. If you are expecting the skates to roll by themselves without effort, then you are in the wrong hobby. These skates have the POTENTIAL to HAUL TAIL, and I have got them there... they are effortless.
Someone said bearings get dirt in them fast. I have not had this issue yet, but have been very careful with them. The next bearings I will buy will be a SKATE RATED bearing, something like BONES REDS or BONES SWISS... and they are serviceable unlike the ones that came on these skates.
Another review I am looking at on another site claims they are slow... again this is entirely not true, this particular claim is not opinion vs opinion, it is science and common sense along with experience and practical application that shows the skates are very fast. I can't believe some of the things people say.
And the last thing I am going to address that another reviewer mentioned was that the wheels are impossible to rotate. It is true that they are all 100mm wheels except the 90mm wheels under the ball of the foot. This is because it gives you a better frame stance in order to turn, crossovers, pivoting and more. To rotate the wheels you just have to keep the 90mm in that position, but you can still rotate them, just not in the "ideal" pattern that experts recommend (1st with 3rd and so forth)... you will just have to rotate them as they sit.
In summary, I absolutely love this skate. I was a little nervous in such a big purchase, but I LOVE them and now have no regrets. If you have the budget, and you understand what they can do for you, and what they CAN'T do for you, then you are ready to get some of the most awesome fitness skates on the planet.
